Description: Claes Nobel, of the Nobel Prize family and Co-founder of NSHSS, was a passionate advocate for environmental causes. In fact, his favorite greeting was “Good Earth to you!” He encouraged all of us to treat every day as if it were Earth Day by taking action and doing our part to preserve, protect, and tend to this wonderful planet we call home. The Gates Scholarship:

Amount: Last Dollar Scholarship for Low-Income Families

Description: The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential. Students must be Pell-eligible and be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident. Additionally, a student must plan to enroll in a four-year degree program, at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university. For American Indian/Alaska Native students, proof of tribal enrollment will be required. An ideal candidate will have an outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10 percent of their graduating class); demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities); and exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.). Description: Headway’s Book Lovers Scholarship will be awarded to support students fueled by their love of reading and dedicated to advancing their education. Applicants must be in their final year of high school, secondary school, (upper) secondary school graduates, or current college or university undergraduates. They must enroll at an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school within the United States for the entire academic year in which the Scholarship is awarded. Applicants must demonstrate leadership at school and/or in the community. A letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member at the applicant’s school or a member of the community that has worked with the applicant in a supervisory role must be submitted. Marie Palello Scholarship:

Description: The Marie Palello Scholarship will be awarded to students who are of 50 percent or more of Italian extraction demonstrating leadership, community service, and high academic achievement. For over sixty years, Marie Pallello served as the Executive Secretary of The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. This scholarship is given to perpetuate her legacy as one of the reasons the JCCIA has flourished. In order to be given priority consideration for the Marie Palello Scholarship, the applicant is required to be of 50 percent or more of Italian extraction and a resident of Illinois, have demonstrated leadership and community service experience, and have high academic achievement. Applicants must be enrolled or admitted into an accredited institution of higher education. Applicants are encouraged to send two letters of recommendation. This scholarship is non-renewable.
