I also find that realistic goals are more attainable. It’s great to set audacious goals, but they can be intimidating in their complexity.

In addition, many people find that setting goals doesn’t work for them because it doesn’t hold their attention strongly enough. Instead, they focus on solving problems because that gets them to find a solutions-focused approach to reaching their #1 goal step by step.

Whichever way you choose, it’s essential to deal with the obstacles all advisors face on the way to realizing their biggest business goals.

Choosing a niche is essential to differentiate yourself in the marketplace. Remember that a niche is really a problem that a certain group of people have — not just a certain group of people. Let me explain…

For example, specializing in “financial planning for dentists” is great because it makes your marketing more focused. But, it doesn’t create a sense of urgency. It doesn’t prove you are a problem solver.

For us, the college planning niche has been amazing because we solve a problem all kinds of upper middle class professionals have — how to pay for college & still save for retirement at the same time.

We solve a problem with a deadline, so there is a built-in sense of urgency. There is an emotional element to providing for one’s family and the children’s education as well. By solving this problem, we get more leads by referral, our marketing is targeted, there is little competition, and it’s easier to earn a prospect’s trust and convert them to long-time comprehensive planning clients.
